Hello Everyone,
As we head into a new year for our Club, I feel it’s important to highlight some significant USAV Rule changes that will be in effect. The referees are currently attending clinics to orient themselves with these changes and as such we will begin to call them in our leagues. Please extend some grace during this first session as clinics run through October for the officials so it may be that not all referees have been trained yet.
I’ll take this time to again stress that it can be beneficial for all team reps and floor captains to have a printed copy of our rules available during a match. Our referees work in many different leagues and may not always have our exceptions memorized. Many disputes can be resolved if a copy of our ‘Rules of Play’ is available for discussion.
Having said that, below is an excerpt of the announcement of the rule changes:
‘With the introduction of the new quadrennium, several USAV rule changes have been introduced. The most notable is the relaxing of what constitutes net violations. These changes are outlined on pages xxv and xxvi in the USAV handbook under significant changes: http://assets.teamusa.org/assets/documents/attached_file/filename/16461/20092011DCRIndoor_SigRuleChang.pdf
There is an excellent instructional video on YouTube that shows what is now legal as well as what continues to be illegal. There is no sound on the YouTube video. Although it is tough to read, pay attention to the caption in green. It depicts what is now legal. To find it, search for ‘FIVB Net Rule’ on the YouTube website.’
The other notable change is the center line violation.
Again, these are major changes in how or what the officials will be calling so please make yourself and your team fully aware of what is to come.
Any questions concerning the interpretation of these rules can be directed to our Referee Assignor, Ken Carey, at referees@fairfaxvolleyball.com.
Thanks and Good Luck!
